Jamaica’s Olympic gold medallist Roje Stona is venturing into new territory as he sets his sights on a career in the NFL. Known for shattering records in the discus throw with a historic 70.00m at the Tokyo Olympics, Stona is now preparing for a transformative challenge in American football. He has earned a spot in the NFL’s International Player Pathway (IPP) programme, a global initiative designed to identify and cultivate athletic talent from across the world.
This January, Stona will join 13 other athletes from diverse nations at a 10-week training camp in Bradenton, Florida. His selection follows a rigorous evaluation session in Kingston, Jamaica, where he impressed scouts from NFL teams. The event, held at Mona Hockey Field, was the first of its kind in Jamaica, and Stona outshone numerous elite local athletes to secure his place.
The IPP, established in 2017, aims to offer athletes from non-American football backgrounds the opportunity to develop their skills for potential inclusion in the NFL. For Stona, who has never played competitive football despite studying at prestigious universities like Clemson and the University of Arkansas, this marks a bold new chapter. His remarkable physicality and athletic experience, including his recent showing at a workout for NFL scouts, have positioned him as a serious contender for a future NFL roster.
Through the IPP, players like Stona can either sign as free agents or, if eligible, enter the NFL Draft in 2025. The programme also offers the unique opportunity of securing a spot on an NFL practice squad, reserved exclusively for international athletes. The selection further highlights the growing interest in international athletes and the NFL’s commitment to fostering global talent.
Stona’s entry into the NFL pathway is a significant departure from his storied career in track and field. But his journey isn’t the only one to watch; fellow Jamaican Sheldon Clarke, a former gridiron player at Munro College, also hopes to impress NFL scouts despite missing out on the October Combine in London due to visa issues.
With a unique blend of athleticism and determination, Roje Stona is breaking new ground, proving that the road to the NFL can be paved in unexpected ways.
