A major law enforcement initiative, “Operation Reassurance,” has successfully taken several individuals into custody across Westmoreland, as the police ramp up efforts to reduce crime in the parish. The operation, conducted throughout the day on Wednesday, is part of a broader strategy to ensure that residents feel safe and secure during the upcoming festive season.
Among those arrested were four individuals listed as wanted, including Nicholas Muthra, a resident of Benta district in Withorn, who was apprehended in Hartford. Muthra is suspected of involvement in the November 10, 2024, murder of Iwayne Bennett, also known as ‘Mad Dog,’ in Bastard Cedar Walk.
Other arrests include individuals connected to a variety of offenses, including suspected lottery scammers and a person arrested for marijuana trafficking. Additionally, two people of interest from Kingston were detained for questioning in connection to ongoing investigations.
Superintendent Othneil Dobson, who oversees policing in Westmoreland, stressed the critical role of community support in solving crimes and apprehending fugitives. “These arrests are a step in the right direction, but we need the help of the public to keep criminals off the streets. Your cooperation can make a significant difference in the safety of our communities,” Dobson said.
The operation saw the participation of over 120 officers, including personnel from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Jamaica Defence Force, and other specialized teams. Key locations such as Morgans Bridge, Frome, Whithorn, and Negril were targeted due to their connection to high crime rates.
As the holiday season approaches, Superintendent Dobson urged the public to stay vigilant and observe road safety guidelines. “We encourage everyone to ensure their vehicles have the proper documentation, and remind motorcycle riders to wear helmets. Together, we can ensure a peaceful and safe holiday season for all,” he added.
