In a passionate defense of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, St Catherine South Eastern MP Robert Miller took to the floor during the 2024/25 State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. His remarks come in the wake of recent scrutiny surrounding Holness, particularly following revelations from the Integrity Commission regarding an investigation into possible illicit enrichment.
Miller expressed strong disapproval of what he perceives as unjust criticism and envy directed toward Holness, whom he has known since childhood. “Some factions within our society, including those aligned with the Opposition, struggle to accept that a man who rose from humble beginnings—a boy raised in a board house in Spanish Town—has reached the pinnacle of leadership in this nation,” Miller stated, emphasizing Holness’s impressive journey.
The MP highlighted what he described as a persistent classist attitude that undermines Holness’s accomplishments. He asserted, “There are individuals who will always attempt to tarnish Andrew Holness’s reputation simply because he does not come from the traditional elite of our society. This mindset will not only demean his achievements but also seeks to cast unwarranted doubts on his character.”
Miller expressed personal offense at the disparagement of Holness, recalling their shared experiences growing up. “We attended the same schools and the same church. I’ve seen firsthand the struggles Andrew faced, and I know the integrity and dedication he brings to his work,” he said.
The first-term MP underscored Holness’s commitment to transforming Jamaica into a prosperous nation. “The young man I knew has transformed that passion into a drive to uplift our country and its citizens,” Miller asserted. “He genuinely cares for the future of Jamaica and has delivered on his promise to lift others from poverty.”
Miller firmly endorsed Holness’s leadership, describing him as a man of integrity who has demonstrated resilience throughout his tenure. “Despite facing global challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Europe, the Government of Jamaica under Holness has achieved unprecedented milestones,” he pointed out, highlighting record low unemployment rates, a decrease in poverty levels, and significant tax cuts.
He further argued for the need to continue Holness’s vision by advocating for a third term for both the Prime Minister and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). “It’s vital that the Jamaican people recognize these accomplishments and understand the importance of maintaining continuity in leadership for the future of our nation,” he concluded, urging constituents to support the JLP in the upcoming elections.
