The Government is charting a new course for Eastern Jamaica, unveiling a suite of initiatives designed to revitalize heritage sites, boost tourism, and upgrade key transport links. The new strategic focus is expected to reshape the region into a premier destination for discerning travelers and investors alike.
At a recent parliamentary session, Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett outlined a series of transformative proposals aimed at harnessing the unique cultural and natural assets of the eastern corridor. The plan includes extensive renovations of historical landmarks, a modern push to upgrade air travel facilities, and strategic enhancements along the Southern Coastal Highway.
A centerpiece of this ambitious agenda is the revival of the iconic Bath Fountain Hotel and Spa. Once earmarked for an upgrade that never fully materialized, the property is now set for a major reinvention. With significant funding allocated to unlock the natural benefits of its thermal springs, Bath Fountain is poised to become a world-class wellness retreat. “Our goal is to blend history with luxury, creating an unmatched destination that celebrates both cultural legacy and modern well-being,” Minister Bartlett remarked.
In addition to Bath Fountain, the historic Castleton Gardens in St Mary is slated for comprehensive improvements. Plans are underway to modernize visitor amenities and boost community engagement, with collaboration from the Ministry of Agriculture ensuring that eco-tourism initiatives are seamlessly integrated.
The expansion of transportation infrastructure also features prominently in the Government’s roadmap. After revisiting previous plans, officials are now optimistic about extending the runway at Ken Jones Aerodrome in Portland. A longer runway will facilitate the landing of larger aircraft, increasing the region’s connectivity and supporting the influx of tourists and investors.
These public sector efforts complement a surge of private sector interest. High-end developments, including boutique hotels and eco-friendly resorts, are emerging alongside a noticeable uptick in property values across the region. Land prices have soared, signaling robust investor confidence and a vibrant future for residential and commercial projects.
Despite ongoing debates about marketing strategies, Bartlett emphasized that tourism promotion remains a nationwide priority. “Our approach is holistic—each destination’s story contributes to Jamaica’s overall appeal. We’re committed to ensuring every gem, from the Blue Lagoon to Rio Grande rafting, gets its moment in the spotlight,” he said.
With these bold measures, Eastern Jamaica is poised for a dynamic transformation, blending its rich heritage with modern amenities to create a destination that stands out on the global stage.
