Kingston, Jamaica – December 25, 2024
After experiencing a slump in attendance attributed to a mediocre selection of films, Palace Amusement Company Limited is strategizing a robust recovery by introducing a lineup of high-profile movies slated for release in the coming year.
Melanie Graham, the company’s Marketing Manager and Director, revealed in an interview with the Jamaica Observer that the global film industry is regaining momentum. With distributors and producers resuming their operations, Palace anticipates a surge in quality film releases for 2025. “We’re excited to see top-tier films returning to our screens. The recent opening of ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ and upcoming releases signal a positive trend for the months ahead,” Graham stated to the Business Observer.
Key releases expected to draw large audiences include “Sonic,” premiering on Christmas Day, followed by the horror remake “Nosferatu.” January will feature action-packed titles like “Den of Thieves 2,” “Wolf Man,” and “Flight Risk,” alongside the superhero epic “Captain America: Brave New World.” March will showcase family favorites “Snow White” and the highly anticipated “Minecraft” movie. The summer lineup promises blockbuster hits such as “Thunder Bolt,” “Mission Impossible 8,” and “Karate Kid: Legends.”
Graham expressed confidence in the company’s trajectory, noting, “We anticipate a significant rebound by summer. The initial increase in ticket sales, especially with the school holidays, is encouraging, and we expect this momentum to carry into the new year.”
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Palace Amusement has faced numerous challenges, including disruptions from Hollywood strikes last year that led to fewer quality film releases and declining attendance. In the first quarter of 2024 (July 1 to September 30), ticket sales plummeted by 33%, resulting in 60,000 fewer admissions and a revenue drop to $345.4 million. This downturn caused a loss of $36.5 million, a stark contrast to the $22.7 million profit recorded in the same period the previous year.
Despite strong performances from films like “Despicable Me 4” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” these titles couldn’t compete with the blockbuster successes of “Barbie,” “Mission: Impossible 7,” and “Equalizer 3” from 2023.
In response, Palace has launched several innovative marketing campaigns to boost attendance and revenues. Notably, the company introduced a national cinema day on October 11, offering discounted tickets at $700 per person across all Palace venues. Additionally, a themed Halloween night event attracted more visitors than typical days, though it fell short of last year’s turnout. “Even without a major draw, the cinema day outperformed our regular days, and the Halloween event added a fun twist for our patrons,” Graham explained.
Another significant enhancement is the integration of 4DX technology at the Carib 5 cinema’s auditorium 4, which has enriched the viewing experience with multi-sensory features. “The addition of 4DX has been a game-changer, allowing us to offer seven releases in this immersive format. Our audiences love the enhanced experience, and occupancy rates are steadily improving,” Graham added.
The company’s interim report to shareholders highlighted these initiatives and projected a promising outlook for 2025, supported by positive forecasts from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO).
Looking ahead, Graham is optimistic about the festive season’s potential, anticipating strong returns from ongoing promotions like discounted vouchers and increased theater rentals. She also welcomed Steven Cooke as the new Assistant Managing Director, emphasizing his role in advancing the company’s technological capabilities. “Steven has been instrumental in optimizing our IT services, ensuring we stay ahead with the latest technologies. His expertise is invaluable to our management team,” Graham noted.
With a strategic focus on high-quality film releases and innovative marketing efforts, Palace Amusement Company Limited is set to reclaim its position as a premier cinema operator, offering audiences compelling reasons to return to the big screen in 2025.
