In a monumental cultural exchange, two of Jamaica’s most iconic figures, reggae legend Bob Marley and sprinting champion Usain Bolt, are set to make their mark at World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The life-sized sculptures of these national heroes will represent Jamaica at one of the largest and most prestigious global events, showcasing the nation’s rich heritage to a worldwide audience.
Sculpted by renowned Jamaican artist Scheed Cole, the statues of Marley and Bolt were commissioned by S Hotels Jamaica and are already on display at the resort’s Montego Bay location. Now, in a significant gesture of cultural diplomacy, S Hotels is lending the statues to the Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) for an extended one-year exhibition at the Expo.
World Expo 2025, running from April to October 2025, is expected to attract over 25 million visitors from across the globe. With the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” the Expo will bring together nations and organizations to collaborate on shaping the future. Jamaica will participate under the “Connecting Lives” sub-theme, emphasizing the country’s role in fostering global unity and collaboration, and showcasing its vibrant culture to a diverse international audience.
Danielle Shaw, Manager at S Hotels Kingston, shared that the statues of Marley and Bolt symbolize more than just individual success; they represent the energy, resilience, and artistic spirit of Jamaica. “Usain Bolt embodies Jamaica’s relentless pursuit of excellence, while Bob Marley’s legacy is synonymous with peace, love, and unity through music,” Shaw said. “These statues are a testament to Jamaica’s global impact, and their presence at Expo 2025 will help share our story with the world.”
The Jamaica Pavilion at the Expo will feature the statues as part of an immersive exhibition designed to showcase the nation’s achievements in tourism, sports, music, and sustainable development. Maureen Smith, Commissioner General for the Jamaica Pavilion, highlighted the cultural significance of the display. “Having Bob Marley and Usain Bolt on display will be a powerful representation of what Jamaica stands for—creativity, athleticism, and unity,” Smith said. “These statues will resonate with people from all walks of life, reflecting the true spirit of our island.”
With over 80% of Expo visitors expected to be Japanese, Jamaica aims to use this opportunity to strengthen its connection with the Asian market, promote sustainable tourism, and demonstrate its progress toward the Vision 2030 development goals.
As the countdown to Expo 2025 continues, the Jamaican public and international visitors alike are eagerly anticipating the unveiling of these powerful symbols of the island’s cultural and athletic greatness. Whether it’s Marley’s enduring message of peace or Bolt’s record-breaking feats, the statues will offer an inspiring glimpse into the heart and soul of Jamaica—an island whose influence stretches far beyond its shores.
