In an effort to restore order and stability, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé has announced a new 18-member Cabinet, a critical step in steering Haiti through its ongoing crisis. This reshuffling of leadership comes after the abrupt end of Garry Conille’s administration, which lasted just five months amid escalating gang violence and a prolonged political vacuum.
The Cabinet, appointed in a decree on Friday, will be responsible for managing the nation’s affairs until February 2026. This move marks a crucial transition as Fils-Aimé begins his tenure, promising a fresh approach to governance in a country still reeling from political instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021.
Fils-Aimé’s Cabinet strikes a balance between continuity and innovation, as eight ministers from the previous administration remain in place, while ten new faces join the team. The retained ministers include familiar figures such as Antoine Augustin (National Education and Vocational Training), Georges Wilbert Franck (Social Affairs and Labour), and Moïse Jean-Pierre Fils (Environment), among others. These appointments are intended to maintain consistency in key sectors while introducing much-needed stability.
The new additions, however, signal a shift towards fresh leadership in crucial areas. Key new ministers include Alfred Metellus (Economy and Finance), Duckenson Lorthe Blema (Public Health and Population), and Patrick Pélissier (Justice and Public Security). These leaders are tasked with addressing some of the most urgent issues facing the nation, from economic reform to improving public safety.
Political analysts suggest that this combination of experienced officials and new appointees could offer a much-needed boost to the government’s ability to implement reforms quickly. With no elected leaders in place and widespread insecurity gripping the country, Haiti’s new Cabinet will be under immense pressure to address both the immediate challenges of governance and the long-term stability of the nation.
Fils-Aimé’s leadership will be closely watched as Haiti navigates these tumultuous times, hoping for a return to normalcy and a path toward rebuilding its democratic institutions.
