A 39-year-old construction worker has been charged with arson and murder following a deadly house fire on September 3 that took the life of a 65-year-old woman in Richmond, St Mary.

The accused, Omar Malcolm of Lewisburg district, St Mary, was detained after authorities investigated the fire, which tragically ended the life of Desrine Malcolm, a resident of Cane Heap, Richmond.

According to Richmond Police, at approximately 9:30 a.m., neighbors saw smoke and flames coming from the woman’s residence and immediately contacted emergency services. Firefighters arrived swiftly but discovered the woman’s remains among the debris after extinguishing the blaze.

After further investigation and questioning with his attorney present, Malcolm was officially charged on October 23. Authorities are currently finalizing his court date.
