The St Thomas Parish Library has undergone a remarkable transformation, marking a new chapter in digital accessibility for its community, all thanks to a generous contribution from the JN Foundation via the Morant Bay chapter of the JN Circle.

The library has recently upgraded its computer lab, receiving seven state-of-the-art computers and a modern air conditioning unit. This change has not only enhanced the library’s environment but has also revitalized its role as a community resource for learning and engagement.

Acting Senior Librarian Simona Spencer expressed her relief at the much-needed upgrades. “In the past, our facility struggled to provide a welcoming environment for users, particularly seniors who faced challenges with outdated technology in uncomfortable conditions,” she stated. “Now, we have a functional and inviting space that caters to everyone, from young adults to seniors.”

With the new cooling system and updated equipment, the library has quickly become a bustling center for digital education. Spencer shared her enthusiasm for the positive reception from library users and staff. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s refreshing to see community members excited to use the new technology. We’re already planning classes for both juniors and adults starting in October,” she noted.

Leon Burke, a senior library aide, highlighted the project’s significance in today’s increasingly digital world. “This initiative is crucial, especially for seniors who were previously hesitant about using technology. Many hadn’t even had the chance to use a computer mouse before,” Burke remarked.

Despite initial hesitations, many seniors are now thriving, learning essential skills like typing, emailing, and navigating basic software applications. “They truly appreciate the opportunity to engage with technology and connect with others in the community,” Burke added.

The Morant Bay chapter of the JN Circle initiated this project by proposing the computer upgrades to the JN Foundation, which swiftly supported the initiative. Robert Powell, a member of the chapter, explained the motivation behind the project. “Our goal was simple: to enhance the library environment for seniors and provide the tools necessary for their digital adaptation. Thanks to the JN Foundation, we could make this a reality,” he said.

The initiative, aimed primarily at seniors, has proven to be an enriching experience for Powell. “Helping seniors embrace modern technology is our way of giving back to the community and fostering inclusivity,” he remarked.

Norman Hinds, president of the JN Circle Morant Bay chapter, expressed pride in the impact of the donation. He emphasized the library’s essential role in serving the public, especially for those who lack access to technology at home. “This upgraded computer lab is a vital resource, offering our seniors and children the chance to utilize computers and develop their skills,” Hinds noted.

Claudine Allen, general manager of the JN Foundation, emphasized the significance of the donation in bridging the digital divide for seniors and empowering the entire community. “This project exemplifies the power of collaboration and its importance in enhancing digital literacy across all age groups,” she said. “The St Thomas Parish Library is setting a new standard for inclusivity and accessibility in computer literacy, particularly for seniors, and I hope it inspires other parish libraries to follow suit.”
