Shane Clarke, the dedicated manager of Red Hills United Football Club (RHUFC), is leading a spirited initiative to raise US$15,000 through a GoFundMe campaign aimed at revitalizing the club and its facilities. With over 15 years of history, RHUFC has been a cornerstone of youth development in the Red Hills community, but like many organizations, it has faced significant challenges, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Sports are essential for young people; they foster growth, provide scholarships, and teach discipline,” Clarke emphasized. “Our GoFundMe is vital for equipping our players with the resources they need to thrive both on and off the field.”

The funds raised will focus on enhancing nutritional support for the team, purchasing essential gear, and covering costs for the upcoming Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) Major League season. Clarke and his team are determined to not only compete but to win the Major League and progress to the KSAFA championship, with aspirations to reach the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) shortly after.

Clarke’s commitment to restoring the club stems from a deep personal connection. After noticing the disheartening condition of the club’s home ground in May 2022—where the grass had grown taller than the eight-foot goalposts—he felt compelled to act. “It was disheartening to see our home field in such a state,” he recalled. “Having played for RHUFC in the past, it felt like my duty to help. I rallied my cousins, and together we set to work. With donations for a lawn mower, we managed to restore the field to a playable condition after weeks of dedicated effort.”

Today, a small but passionate team of eight, including six volunteers, is dedicated to improving the club and its facilities. Currently, 35 players are registered, eager to represent RHUFC and contribute to its legacy.

Support for Clarke’s restoration efforts has also come from various community members, including local Member of Parliament Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn, as well as corporate sponsors who recognize the importance of the club in fostering youth engagement through sports.

As RHUFC seeks to re-establish itself and provide opportunities for local youth, the GoFundMe campaign stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to nurturing talent and teamwork in the heart of Red Hills.
