Cavalier SC began their Jamaica Premier League campaign with a gritty 2-1 comeback win over Portmore United at Sabina Park on Sunday. After conceding an early goal, the defending champions fought back to secure three points in a match that was decided by a second-half own goal.

Portmore United drew first blood in the 19th minute when Tarick Ximines found the net, putting pressure on Cavalier. However, the lead didn’t last long, as Cavalier’s Jalmaro Calvin responded with a crucial equalizer in the 25th minute. The deadlock was broken in the 60th minute, but not in the way Portmore had hoped—an own goal from Akeem Mullings sealed their fate and handed Cavalier the victory.

Elsewhere, Vere United rebounded from a loss in their opening game to defeat Molynes United 3-1. Vere’s Roshawn Oldfield got them off to a strong start, netting in the 11th minute, only for Jeremy Nelson of Molynes to equalize two minutes later. Denzel McKenzie restored Vere’s advantage in the 25th minute, and a late goal from Romarion Thomas during injury time wrapped up a well-earned win.

In another fixture, newly promoted Racing United recorded their first-ever Premier League victory by narrowly beating Dunbeholden FC 1-0. Mikyle Williams scored the decisive goal in the 40th minute, bouncing back after their narrow loss in their season opener against Waterhouse FC.

Meanwhile, Humble Lion and Tivoli Gardens played out a 0-0 stalemate in a match where neither team could break the deadlock, sharing the points.

The season is off to an exciting start, with Cavalier looking to defend their title and newly promoted teams eager to make their mark on the league.
