In a compelling address at the recent G20 Tourism Working Group Meeting in Belém, Brazil, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, urged world leaders to prioritize investments that enhance tourism capabilities in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Speaking at the side event held from September 19-20, 2024, Bartlett underscored the stark contrast in tourism revenues, with G20 nations amassing nearly $1.5 trillion, while SIDS generate only about $35 billion. He emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to promote sustainable tourism practices and empower local enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized businesses.
“Our islands possess unique natural beauty and cultural richness. By investing in eco-tourism initiatives and safeguarding our heritage, we can create a robust tourism ecosystem that not only draws visitors but also benefits our communities economically,” stated Bartlett.
He further proposed the creation of a Global Tourism Resilience Fund, aimed at equipping SIDS with the necessary tools to address challenges posed by climate change and global economic fluctuations.
Additionally, Bartlett engaged in discussions with India’s Minister of Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, focusing on opportunities to tap into India’s growing travel market, reflecting Jamaica’s strategy to diversify its tourism sources.
The Minister’s calls for action highlight Jamaica’s dedication to fostering international collaboration that addresses the pressing needs of island nations reliant on tourism for economic stability.
