Jason DaCosta is walking into the 2025 Mouttet Mile with the kind of confidence that only comes from preparation—and firepower. The decorated trainer is fielding a formidable trio in what is the region’s richest single-race purse, valued at US$300,000, and he’s not hiding his belief that this year could belong to his camp.
Three Charges, One Goal
At the forefront is Funcaandun, last year’s winner, now running at a lighter weight. After a quiet season capped with two wins, the colt has been primed specifically for this mile-long battle. His training gallop last Sunday over 7 furlongs in 1:25.3 signaled a return to top form. “That’s the sharpest I’ve seen from him all year,” DaCosta remarked post-work. “Everything we’ve done has been to get him to peak right now.”
The Rise of Girvano
Not far behind in expectations is Girvano, a three-year-old who has shown a steady upward curve. Clocking 1:26.1 over the same distance, Girvano’s late-closing style makes him a wild card with real upside. “He reminds me a lot of Funcaandun’s rise last season—he’s matured fast and finishes strong,” DaCosta noted.
Dothraki’s Dangerous Form
Rounding out the trio is Dothraki, who, despite an underwhelming return in the Port Royal Sprint, is now tuned and ready. “We knew he wasn’t going to be sharp for that race. We just needed him to get back into rhythm,” DaCosta explained. Since then, Dothraki has delivered at training, matching Funcaandun’s 1:25.3 and flashing the kind of pace and responsiveness that hints at danger for the rest of the field. “He’s classy, he’s fast, and he’s hungry,” DaCosta said. “If he fires, it’s going to be a problem for the others.”
The Stakes Are Set
With three serious contenders, DaCosta is bringing depth, versatility, and momentum into the Mouttet Mile. From the seasoned Funcaandun to the surging Girvano and the sleeper in Dothraki, the barn is stacked. “We’re ready,” DaCosta said. “All I need now is a clean trip and a little racing luck.”
Tomorrow’s race won’t just be about who’s fastest—it will be about who timed their ascent to perfection. And DaCosta has stacked his deck accordingly.
