Mahon Davis, a 38-year-old resident of Ewarton, St. Catherine, has been sentenced to 22 months in prison or a hefty fine exceeding J$1 million after pleading guilty to possession and trafficking of illegal drugs. The sentencing took place on Monday, September 23, at the Manchester Parish Court.
The charges stem from a police operation conducted by the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) on July 25, during which officers discovered approximately two kilograms of cocaine and 12 pounds of ganja in Davis’s vehicle.
According to police reports, law enforcement officials were patrolling the area when they spotted Davis driving a Toyota Axio with a female passenger. Upon signaling for him to stop, he complied, and a search of the vehicle was conducted. The search revealed two garbage bags containing ganja in the trunk and one kilogram of cocaine concealed behind the glove compartment. Further inspection uncovered an additional kilogram of cocaine hidden in another compartment of the car.
Both Davis and his female passenger were taken into custody, but she was released shortly after.
In light of his guilty plea, Davis received the following sentences:
- Possession of ganja: six months imprisonment or a fine of J$15,000
- Trafficking ganja: six months imprisonment or a fine of J$105,816
- Possession of cocaine: six months imprisonment or a fine of J$500,000
- Trafficking cocaine: four months suspended sentence for two years or a fine of J$500,000
All sentences are to run concurrently if Davis is unable to pay the fines.
Davis is scheduled for an asset forfeiture hearing at the Manchester Circuit Court on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
