Jamaica’s medal count at the NACAC Championships climbed higher on Saturday morning in Freeport, Grand Bahama, but it was Nikaoli Williams’ breakthrough performance that stole the show.

Originally drafted in as a replacement for national champion Carey McLeod, Williams turned what looked like a stopgap into a statement. He soared to 8.16m in the men’s long jump—his best mark to date—and secured victory ahead of American rival Will Williams (7.96m). Jamaica also picked up a second medal in the same event with Shawn-D Thompson landing bronze at 7.87m.

The personal record improves on Williams’ previous 8.13m effort from earlier in the season and puts him on the radar for selection to next month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. While only Tajay Gayle and Carey McLeod have so far met the 8.27m qualifying mark, Williams’ consistency has thrust him into serious contention.

Hall Delivers in the Field

Samantha Hall added another gold to Jamaica’s tally in the women’s discus. Her winning throw of 61.19m comfortably outdistanced the field, with the United States’ Gabi Jacobs (57.07m) and Canada’s Julia Tunks (56.78m) settling for the minor medals.

Sprint Finals Take Shape

The morning session also set the stage for exciting finals on the track. Christopher Taylor clocked 20.49s in the men’s 200m heats, the quickest time overall despite a stiff headwind. Kadrian Goldson’s 21.09s effort secured him a lane in the final as well.

On the women’s side, Gabrielle Matthews impressed with a 23.04s run to win her heat—the second-best time of the round—while teammate Roniesha McGregor (23.59s) also advanced.

Momentum Building Ahead of Tokyo

For Jamaica, the morning session underscored its depth across disciplines—field dominance, sprint reliability, and now a new long jump contender stepping into the limelight. Williams’ leap was more than a personal best; it was a reminder that even late additions can reshape the narrative heading into Tokyo.
