KINGSTON, Jamaica — A familiar face from last year’s election season has reappeared—this time in a rehabilitation gym, not a campaign motorcade. Dalvarine Bruce, who lost her left leg during a February 2024 Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) caravan, took her first supported steps on a custom-fitted prosthetic this week.
The new limb comes courtesy of the Ministry of Health’s New Limb, New Life programme, an initiative designed to subsidise modern prosthetics for civilians injured in high-risk public activities. Officials confirmed that Bruce is among the early cohort of recipients, highlighting the Administration’s effort to make advanced mobility aids accessible outside private clinics.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness, present for the fitting at Surgix Prosthetics Clinic, framed the moment as a benchmark for social equity. In a brief statement, he noted that physical recovery must be matched with “policies that keep Jamaicans safe while exercising their democratic rights.” Images shared on his social channels show Bruce—dressed in pink—mastering parallel-bar exercises while technicians dialled in micro-adjustments to the carbon-fibre limb.
Bruce’s accident, along with the fatal fall of 15-year-old Lamar Grey from a People’s National Party vehicle in the same election cycle, triggered bipartisan calls for stricter crowd-management rules. A draft “Motorcade Safety Code” now sits before Parliament; if implemented, it would mandate railing heights on flatbeds, enforce speed limits, and limit roof-riding—practices long woven into Jamaica’s campaign culture.
While policy debates continue, Bruce’s immediate focus is mobility. Physiotherapists estimate she will transition from crutches to unaided walking within three months, provided rehabilitation remains consistent. Her return to work as a community organiser is already on the calendar.
If the New Limb, New Life scheme attains its target funding, at least 150 amputees are projected to receive modern prostheses over the next two fiscal years. Bruce’s breakthrough, therefore, functions as both a personal victory and a proof-of-concept for wider national rehabilitation ambitions.
