In a rare joint statement, CIA Director Bill Burns and UK MI6 Chief Richard Moore have raised alarms about the current state of global security, asserting that the world order is facing unprecedented threats reminiscent of Cold War tensions.
In an op-ed for the Financial Times, Burns and Moore highlighted the critical nature of their alliance, stating, “We have no more trusted or esteemed allies than each other.” They emphasized that their cooperation would be essential in addressing the broad spectrum of global threats posed by Russia, China, and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.
The situation in Gaza is of particular concern to both intelligence chiefs. Burns revealed at a Financial Times conference in London that efforts are underway to develop a detailed framework for a ceasefire, with intensive collaboration with Egyptian and Qatari mediators. “We will make this more detailed proposal, I hope, in the next several days,” Burns noted.
The US and UK remain staunch allies in supporting Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. Burns and Moore underscored the importance of maintaining their support, stating, “Staying the course is more vital than ever,” and reaffirmed their commitment to counteracting Russian intelligence operations in Europe.
The article also touched on the use of cutting-edge technologies, including advanced AI and cloud computing, to manage and analyze the extensive data collected by their agencies.
The joint statement comes ahead of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s scheduled visit to Washington on September 13, where he is set to meet with US President Joe Biden. The discussions will center on continuing support for Ukraine and efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, according to the White House.
The visit coincides with growing differences between the two nations regarding their stance on Israel. Recently, the UK has suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel, citing concerns over potential violations of international law in Gaza.
The alignment between the US and UK on these global issues is crucial as they navigate a complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
