Kyiv – In a decisive move to refine its military strategy, President Volodymyr Zelensky has restructured the top echelons of Ukraine’s armed forces. A presidential decree issued Sunday replaced Anatoliy Bargylevych as chief of general staff with Andriy Gnatov, a seasoned commander known for his direct combat experience.
Zelensky emphasized that Gnatov’s background makes him uniquely qualified to translate the hard-earned lessons of Ukraine’s brigades into enhanced operational planning. “He’s a combat leader, ready to integrate frontline insights into our defensive and offensive strategies,” the president said, outlining his vision for a more agile and effective military command.
The appointment comes as Ukraine continues to reorganize its military structure in response to ongoing challenges on the front lines. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov outlined that the transformation of the command system aims to enforce uniform standards and optimize coordination across all units. With more than 27 years of military experience, Gnatov is expected to spearhead this process, reinforcing the armed forces’ capacity to adapt and respond to emerging threats.
Meanwhile, Anatoliy Bargylevych has been reassigned as the chief inspector within the Ministry of Defence, a role that will allow him to focus on enhancing operational oversight from a different vantage point.
The restructuring coincides with a period of intense military engagement in the eastern Donetsk region, where Ukrainian forces are contending with a more formidable Russian military presence. This strategic overhaul reflects Ukraine’s broader commitment to continually improving its military readiness and ensuring that every tactical advantage is leveraged as the conflict evolves.
As Ukraine adapts to the shifting dynamics on the battlefield, this leadership change marks another step in its drive to integrate real-world combat experience into every level of military planning.
