In a strategic move to bolster Jamaica’s public transportation network, the government is extending the reach of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) beyond the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region. Transport Minister Daryl Vaz revealed that the expansion is designed to offer safe, dependable, and affordable transit options to emerging urban areas and rural parishes.
Launched initially in November 2024, the first phase of this initiative aimed to support new housing developments in the greater Bernard Lodge area of St. Catherine, including projects like Silver Sun Estate, Phoenix Park Village 1 and 2, and Old Harbour. The surge in commuter numbers in these regions underscores the increasing demand for robust public transit services.
Minister Vaz emphasized that the purpose of the JUTC expansion is not to undercut private Public Passenger Vehicle (PPV) operators but to elevate the standard of public transportation with professional, reliable, and secure services. “Our goal is to set a new benchmark in public transit, ensuring that safety and affordability go hand in hand,” he stated.
Looking ahead, plans are underway to launch additional premium routes, such as those connecting Catherine Estates, Mandeville to May Pen, and linking Montego Bay with Lucea and Negril, all operating from the Montego Bay Depot. These new routes are expected to enhance connectivity across the island, particularly in light of the ongoing improvements to the nation’s road networks.
Since the inception of the expanded routes, JUTC has transported a total of 115,742 passengers, averaging around 2,561 riders per day across 14 distinct routes. Highlighting the success of the new services, premium routes servicing the Silver Sun Estate and Phoenix Park Village developments have shown significant uptake, while high-traffic routes such as those linking Old Harbour to May Pen and Yallahs to downtown Kingston continue to demonstrate robust demand.
This ambitious expansion reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the mobility needs of Jamaica’s expanding communities, ensuring that efficient and accessible public transportation becomes a cornerstone of the island’s future development.
