In a significant boost for the nation’s infrastructure, Haiti has inaugurated a revamped international airport in Les Cayes, offering a strategic alternative to the turmoil experienced in the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The upgraded Antoine Simon Airport now stands alongside Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture Airport and the northern Cap-Haïtien facility, expanding both Haiti’s global reach and domestic travel options. The revitalization project included extending the runway and modernizing the terminal facilities to comply with international aviation standards. Key upgrades encompass essential services such as immigration and customs, ensuring smoother operations for arriving and departing passengers.
Leslie Voltaire, the head of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (CPT), led the ceremony, emphasizing that the new airport is a cornerstone for promoting economic growth and stability in the Southern region. This strategic development is particularly critical in light of recent challenges, including security issues that led to the closure of the primary airport in Port-au-Prince following an attack by armed gangs in November 2023.
The new Les Cayes airport is expected to alleviate the strain on existing routes and provide a more secure and efficient travel alternative, paving the way for enhanced regional connectivity and contributing to a more resilient aviation sector in Haiti.
