In an impressive display of skill and strategy, emerging jockey Richie Shakes has marked his territory as the leading apprentice in his cohort by clinching his third race win. The latest triumph occurred on Saturday, January 18, 2025, when Shakes steered Benson to victory in the competitive six-furlong George HoSang Trophy.

Trained by the experienced Fitznahum Williams, Shakes demonstrated exceptional tactical acumen from the get-go. As the gates swung open, he unleashed a rapid surge, positioning Benson ahead of the field. Throughout the race, Shakes expertly managed Benson’s pace, ensuring the horse conserved enough stamina to overpower contenders in the crucial final furlongs.

The coordinated effort culminated in a decisive finish, with Benson crossing the line 1½ lengths ahead of the second-place Mudshaft, ridden by Trevor Simpson, and Thalita, piloted by Robert Halledeen, who took third. The winning time was an impressive 1:14.3, underscoring the duo’s competitive edge.

In the aftermath of the race, Shakes emphasized the importance of adhering to his trainer’s game plan. “Fitznahum provided clear instructions tailored to Benson’s strengths as a sprinter. Leading from the second gate allowed us to control the race tempo effectively,” Shakes remarked. He reflected on his journey, recalling his first win as a licensed apprentice on December 28, 2024, and highlighted how each victory builds his expertise and confidence.

“This third win is a significant milestone, but it’s just the beginning,” Shakes added. “My focus remains on continuous improvement and securing more victories for Benson and future mounts.”

As Richie Shakes continues to ascend in the racing world, his dedication and strategic mindset position him as a promising talent poised for even greater achievements in the seasons to come.
