In a firm response on Wednesday, the European Union dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertions regarding a potential takeover of Greenland as “speculative and unfounded.” The EU also reiterated its obligation to protect the autonomous Danish territory should it face any form of aggression.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, President-elect Trump hinted at the possibility of deploying military forces to assert American control over Greenland, a move that sparked immediate concern among European leaders. Additionally, Trump threatened to impose substantial tariffs on Denmark should the Nordic nation decline to relinquish its Greenlandic region.
The European Commission, striving to maintain diplomatic decorum, emphasized its eagerness to collaborate with the forthcoming U.S. administration. “We are addressing theoretical scenarios proposed by a leader who has yet to assume office,” stated a Commission representative. Another official highlighted the paramount importance of respecting national sovereignty, asserting that “the territorial integrity of nations is a fundamental principle we uphold.”
When questioned about the applicability of the EU’s mutual defense pact to Greenland, spokesperson Paula Pinho confirmed that the region falls under the alliance’s protective measures. “While we recognize the theoretical nature of these claims, our commitment to mutual defense remains steadfast,” Pinho added, declining to delve deeper into the speculative scenario.
Greenland, known for its abundant mineral resources, holds significant strategic value. As an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, it maintains a unique relationship with the European Union, being both a part of the bloc and an associated territory of its 27 member states.
Trump’s remarks extended beyond Greenland, with the President-elect also mentioning potential military involvement to secure the Panama Canal and applying economic pressure against Canada. These statements have heightened tensions and raised concerns about future U.S. foreign policy directions under Trump’s leadership.
