In a significant loss to the Jamaican music scene, Lloyd Evans, a distinguished music producer renowned for his influential role in Dancehall and Reggae, passed away on December 25 at the University Hospital of the West Indies.
Evans, who led Blue Mountain Music from its base on Grove Road in St. Andrew, was instrumental in the careers of numerous iconic artists. His expertise and vision were crucial in launching and shaping the sounds of legends like Joseph Hill and Culture, Barrington Levy, Cocoa Tea, Tenor Saw, Frankie Paul, and Super Cat, among others.
Beyond his production prowess, Evans was celebrated for hosting vibrant dance events at Grove Road, which became a staple in the local music community. His ability to blend talent with opportunity made him a beloved figure among artists and fans alike.
Olivia Grange, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, lauded Evans as a “serious contributor to Jamaican music.” She highlighted his legacy in transforming the industry and expressed her condolences to his family, including his son David, as well as his extended network of relatives, friends, and colleagues.
Known for his humility and generous spirit, Lloyd Evans left an indelible mark on Jamaican music, fostering a legacy that will inspire future generations.
