In a significant stride toward enhanced public safety, St. Thomas Eastern has recorded a remarkable 38 per cent decline in major crimes this year compared to 2023. Member of Parliament Dr. Michelle Charles, representing the Jamaica Labour Party, shared these encouraging statistics during her contribution to the State of the Constituency Debate in the House of Representatives last week.
The constituency, which spans the police jurisdictions of Morant Bay, Port Morant, Golden Grove, and Bath, has seen a substantial drop in reported major crimes, from 74 incidents last year to 46 this year. Dr. Charles attributed this positive trend to the dedication and vigilance of the local police force and broader community engagement.
Breaking Down the Numbers
Dr. Charles detailed the crime statistics, highlighting specific areas of improvement:
- Murders: A significant reduction, with only three incidents reported this year compared to seven in the same period last year.
- Break-ins: Twenty break-in offences were recorded, down from 26 in 2023.
“This decline is a reflection of the hard work and sacrifices made by our security forces and the growing unity within our community,” Dr. Charles emphasized.
A Safer Path for St. Thomas Eastern
Dr. Charles commended the security forces for their unwavering commitment to public safety, stating, “As St. Thomas Eastern develops, we see crime and violence trending downwards. Let me acknowledge and appreciate the police department’s efforts in creating a safer environment for all.”
Beyond the numbers, Dr. Charles called for continued collaboration between law enforcement, residents, and community stakeholders to sustain the momentum in crime reduction. Her remarks signal optimism for the future of St. Thomas Eastern as it continues its journey toward development and stability.
With the constituency’s crime rates trending downward, the region sets an example for others across the island, demonstrating the power of focused leadership and collective action in fostering safer communities.
