Real Madrid surged to a 2-0 victory over Getafe on Sunday, pushing them into second place in La Liga, just one point behind leaders Barcelona. Kylian Mbappé, who has faced scrutiny in recent weeks for his form, finally silenced critics with a well-executed goal after Jude Bellingham’s penalty opened the scoring.
The match saw a solid performance from Madrid, despite several missed opportunities by Mbappé. Getafe’s game plan focused on slowing down the tempo, but they were undone by a foul in the penalty area from Allan Nyom on Antonio Rudiger. Bellingham took charge of the spot-kick, coolly beating Getafe goalkeeper David Soria to give Madrid the lead at the half-hour mark, netting his third goal in as many league games.
Seven minutes before the break, Mbappé extended Madrid’s advantage, curling a brilliant strike into the far corner following a precise assist from Bellingham. The French forward’s eighth league goal of the season helped Real Madrid maintain their dominance.
After the break, the game opened up. Mbappé showed his creative side, setting up Brahim Diaz with a chipped pass, but the Moroccan’s shot flew just over the bar. He then had a chance to double his tally, rounding Soria only to shoot wide.
Despite his misses, Mbappé continued to play a key role, creating further chances for teammates, including Fede Valverde, whose shot was saved by Soria. Getafe’s best opportunity came late, as John Patrick’s thunderous shot struck the woodwork, but they were unable to capitalize on Madrid’s occasional inefficiency.
Mbappé’s late miss in stoppage time, shooting wide from close range, reflected his determination to prove his worth following his high-profile summer transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. Nevertheless, the win leaves Madrid within striking distance of Barcelona, with one game in hand, as they aim to extend their winning streak in midweek against Athletic Bilbao.
