In a high-level engagement aimed at strengthening regional disaster preparedness, Jamaica’s Minister of Labour and Social Security, Pearnel Charles Jr, welcomed senior representatives from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to the ministry’s headquarters in Kingston on Tuesday.
Kate Forbes, President of the IFRC, and Necephor Mghendi, Head of Delegation for the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean, participated in a strategic dialogue focused on collaboration in humanitarian response mechanisms, especially in the face of increasing climate-related vulnerabilities across the region.
Minister Charles Jr used the opportunity to underscore Jamaica’s commitment to reinforcing its social protection systems and improving resilience frameworks through international partnerships. He noted the pivotal role organisations like the IFRC play in bolstering not only emergency response but also workforce protection and social stability in the wake of disasters.
The discussions highlighted the mutual goal of deepening cooperation between the Government of Jamaica and the IFRC, particularly around initiatives that can bridge local disaster management efforts with global best practices. Both parties explored avenues for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and community-level interventions.
The visit marks a continued effort by the IFRC to work closely with Caribbean governments in anticipation of heightened disaster risks. With Jamaica often on the frontline of tropical storm impacts, the ministry emphasized the urgency of preemptive coordination and rapid response strategies supported by strong international ties.
The courtesy call signals not only diplomatic goodwill but also the shared urgency of preparing Caribbean labour and social protection systems for a more volatile climate future.
