In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Unicomer Group, parent company of Courts Jamaica, has announced a $75 million recovery initiative aimed at helping both the wider community and its employees rebuild their lives.
According to Ann-Marie Walters, Managing Director of Unicomer Jamaica, the support will be directed toward government relief programs, local community projects, and direct assistance for affected staff. She emphasized that the move is not merely corporate responsibility but a reflection of the company’s enduring bond with the island.
“For over sixty years, Jamaica has been our home, not just our market,” Walters said. “We stand with our people through every storm, committed to rebuilding stronger than before.”
Feliz Siman, Unicomer Group’s Caribbean Vice President and Managing Director, echoed the sentiment, noting that the company’s regional footprint gives it a unique position to mobilize resources swiftly in times of crisis.
“Across every territory we serve, Unicomer moves as one family. In moments like this, unity is not a slogan — it’s action,” he said.
Headquartered in El Salvador, Unicomer operates in 20 countries, managing more than 25 consumer brands including Ashley Furniture, Courts Optical, Lucky Dollar, and Radio Shack. The company employs over 13,000 people across Latin America and the Caribbean.
The contribution marks one of the largest private-sector responses to Hurricane Melissa’s devastation, reinforcing Unicomer’s long-standing reputation as both a retailer and a reliable partner in national recovery.
