ST JAMES, Jamaica — Robin Russell surprised delegates at the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association’s annual general meeting on Friday by announcing he will not stand for another term.
- Tenure in Brief. Russell has steered the JHTA since 2022, winning re-election twice and guiding the organisation through pandemic recovery and the recent tourism surge.
- Farewell Message. “Serving this industry has been an honour,” he told members, thanking them for “unwavering collaboration” during his time in office.
- Next in Line. A private ballot later today will determine the association’s new president. Russell asked the membership to show the same commitment to whoever takes the reins, emphasising continuity in advocacy and policy work.
- Challenges Ahead. The incoming leader will confront labour shortages, rising operational costs, and a renewed push for sustainable tourism initiatives as the sector readies for the 2025 high season.
With Russell stepping aside, stakeholders now await the outcome of today’s vote—and fresh insight into how the JHTA’s priorities may evolve under new leadership.
