In an embarrassing slip-up, the Kingston & St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) unveiled a brand-new street sign on Sunday honouring sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce—only for onlookers to spot her surname spelled “Fraser-Price.”
The sign, erected on the freshly renamed Ashoka Road in Waterhouse, should have read Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive. Instead, a rogue “i” made it through the final checks. KSAMC chief executive officer Robert Hill addressed the crowd moments after the reveal, admitting the typo and promising a fast turnaround.
“A corrected sign will be in place within the next 12 hours,” Hill vowed. “Mistakes occur, but they don’t diminish today’s celebration of Shelly-Ann’s enormous impact.”
Fraser-Pryce, ever gracious, brushed aside the error and told residents she was thrilled that the street where she once sprinted as a child now carries her name. Her focus, she said, remains on motivating Waterhouse’s youth to chase big dreams.
City officials echoed Hill’s apology throughout the ceremony, pledging that by 10 a.m. Monday the sign would display the eight-time Olympic medallist’s name correctly. Until then, the world-class sprinter’s reputation—as always—remains untarnished, even if the sign briefly wasn’t.
