Apprentice sensation Tajay Suckoo will watch the next month of racing from the sidelines after breaking his ankle in a freak training-track mishap.
The 20-year-old, who sits fifth on the current jockeys’ table, was guiding a two-year-old prospect through routine morning work when the youngster spooked near the six-furlong marker. Alarmed by a fallen horse on the sand, the colt veered sharply to the rail and pitched Suckoo to the ground.
Track medics rushed the rider to hospital, where X-rays confirmed a clean fracture. “The waiting felt endless, and the pain was brutal,” Suckoo admitted afterwards. “You know injuries are part of this job, but it never gets easier.”
Doctors have immobilised the ankle in a cast and ordered a minimum five-week rest before a follow-up evaluation. In the meantime, Suckoo will begin light physiotherapy and strength work once swelling subsides.
The enforced break pauses what had been a breakout season for the young reinsman, but he remains upbeat. “I’ll be back as soon as the leg allows—and hungrier than ever,” he said.
Suckoo’s agents expect him to target a late-summer return, provided imaging in five weeks shows solid bone healing and full joint stability.
