Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji proved unstoppable at the Grand Slam Track Meet on Saturday, storming to victory in the women’s 1500m and securing the overall short distance crown.
Crossing the line in 4:04.51, Welteji’s win capped off a powerful two-day performance that saw her rack up 20 points and walk away with the top prize of US$100,000.
Meanwhile, American Nikki Hiltz, despite a strong showing across both events, settled for second place overall with 18 points after finishing third in the 1500m (4:05.39). Kenya’s Susan Ejore clocked 4:05.10 for second place in the race and third overall, earning US$30,000.
It was a tough night for Jamaican favorite Natoya Goule-Toppin, who battled through injury to complete the 1500m in 4:20.73. She finished seventh, but her determination was met with a standing ovation from the Kingston crowd. Goule-Toppin earned five points across the two events, totaling US$12,500.
