Jamaica’s Sports Minister, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, has unveiled an ambitious $100 million investment plan aimed at transforming grassroots cricket across the island. The initiative, spread over three years, is set to bolster school programs, develop young talent, and provide much-needed support to women’s cricket.
A Shift in Focus
The move comes after the Government opted out of bidding for the 2024 ICC Twenty20 World Cup in 2023, citing high costs. Instead, the decision was made to channel funds into long-term cricket development, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of talent for the nation’s future.
“This year, $40 million will be disbursed,” Grange announced at the Melbourne 5K launch. “We’re prioritizing youth programs, and a portion will go towards Jamaica’s women’s cricket team, who made us proud in last year’s Super50 tournament.”
Strengthening the Foundation
Grange highlighted plans to expand cricket’s reach in primary and basic schools, ensuring young athletes receive structured training from an early age. She also revealed ongoing discussions with a prominent cricketer to spearhead development initiatives.
“Our goal is to engage schools at the grassroots level and establish a proper framework for training. We’re also working to bring in experienced cricketers to help drive these efforts,” she said.
Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) President, Dr. Donovan Bennett, echoed the need for better coaching structures, emphasizing that many schools lack trained coaches. The JCA is rolling out extensive training programs to fill this gap.
“We’re focused on training as many level-one coaches as possible, particularly in primary and high schools, where cricket programs already exist but lack the necessary expertise,” Bennett explained.
Beyond Development: Upgrading Infrastructure
This latest investment builds on the Government’s growing commitment to cricket. Earlier this year, an additional $75 million was pledged to upgrade the lighting at Sabina Park ahead of the West Indies’ home series against Australia in July, pushing the total cricket investment past $110 million for 2025.
With a renewed vision and strategic investment, Jamaica is setting the stage for a cricketing revival, ensuring the sport thrives at both the grassroots and professional levels for years to come.
