A petition urging the Canadian government to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship has sparked a heated national debate, drawing over 250,000 signatures since its launch on February 20. The petition, which accuses Musk of undermining Canada’s sovereignty, highlights his controversial ties to international political figures and his outspoken comments regarding the country’s autonomy.
Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, a native of Saskatchewan. Critics argue that Musk’s actions, particularly his vocal support for former US President Donald Trump and his repeated remarks about Canada’s political standing, jeopardize the nation’s independence.
In a now-deleted post, Musk dismissed the petition, mocking Canada as “not a real country” on the social media platform X. This remark only added fuel to the fire, with many seeing it as further evidence of Musk’s disregard for Canadian sovereignty.
Charlie Angus, a Canadian Member of Parliament from the New Democratic Party, is the petition’s primary sponsor. Angus has been outspoken in his belief that Musk’s growing influence is detrimental to Canada. “Figures like Musk, who are closely tied to foreign interests, pose a real threat to our country’s future,” Angus stated. “This petition allows Canadians to express their growing concerns over the unchecked power of global oligarchs.”
While the petition is unlikely to directly lead to action, as Canadian law does not allow petitions to compel government decisions, it may receive a formal response. The Canadian government has the authority to revoke citizenship in specific cases, such as fraud or misrepresentation during the immigration process, or involvement in foreign military activities against Canada. However, no such allegations have been made against Musk to date.
As Parliament remains on recess until March 24, the petition continues to dominate public discourse, reflecting wider concerns about the influence of powerful figures on Canadian politics and sovereignty.
