A devastating bus accident in Guatemala’s capital has left at least 31 people dead and several others critically injured after the vehicle veered off a bridge and plunged into a contaminated river below.
The incident occurred early Monday morning when the bus, carrying 75 passengers, crashed off the Puente de Belice bridge, a major entryway into Guatemala City. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, working frantically to rescue survivors trapped under the wreckage.
“We have recovered 31 bodies so far and are doing everything we can to reach those still trapped,” said Mynor Ruano, a spokesperson for the city’s fire department.
Rescue workers managed to pull at least 10 survivors from the wreck, some of whom were transported to nearby hospitals with life-threatening injuries. Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the accident, though early reports suggest the bus was en route from San Agustin Acasaguastlan, a town in El Progreso department, approximately 90 kilometers (56 miles) from the capital.
The tragedy has sparked concerns over road safety in the region, as investigations continue into what led to the catastrophic crash.
