Kingston’s harbor witnessed a significant diplomatic and naval event this week as the HMS Medway, an offshore patrol vessel from the United Kingdom, made a highly anticipated visit to Jamaica. The ship’s arrival underscores the UK’s ongoing commitment to regional cooperation, reinforcing its partnership with Jamaica in security, trade, and disaster response.
Aboard the vessel, the British High Commission hosted an exclusive reception attended by key figures from the Jamaican government and military. Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith and Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Chief of Defence Staff Vice Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman were among the distinguished guests who toured the vessel and met with its 45-member crew. The engagement offered insights into the ship’s operational capabilities and strategic role in the Caribbean.
British High Commissioner Judith Slater emphasized the significance of the visit, stating, “This stop in Jamaica is more than a routine port call—it’s a demonstration of the deep and evolving collaboration between our two nations. In an era of shifting global security concerns, maintaining strong international partnerships is more critical than ever.”
HMS Medway serves as the UK’s primary naval presence in the Caribbean, dedicated to combatting illicit trafficking, providing humanitarian aid, and supporting disaster relief efforts. The ship has previously played an instrumental role in counter-narcotics operations and hurricane response missions across the region.
During its stay, the crew will work closely with the JDF Coast Guard in training exercises designed to enhance regional security coordination. Lieutenant Commander Christopher Poulson, acting captain of HMS Medway, praised the warmth and hospitality extended by the Jamaican people, particularly the JDF Coast Guard, which recently assisted in an emergency repatriation of a crew member. “The professionalism and camaraderie we’ve experienced here reaffirm the value of strong international alliances,” Poulson remarked.
