PARIS, France — The Olympic balloon that became a defining symbol of the 2024 Summer Games is set to return to the Paris skyline every year until the next Olympics in Los Angeles, President Emmanuel Macron confirmed on Friday.

The illuminated balloon, which hovered over the Tuileries Gardens near the Louvre, was a centerpiece of Paris’ innovative approach to the Games. It replaced the traditional Olympic flame with a sustainable display, using water vapor and LED lights to create a glowing spectacle that captivated thousands each night.

Macron announced that the balloon will be reinstated annually from June 21, coinciding with France’s famed music festival, until September 14, the date he hopes to establish as a national sports celebration. The initiative aims to keep the Olympic spirit alive and reinforce Paris’ reputation as a global hub for sports and culture.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a strong advocate for preserving the balloon, expressed her enthusiasm on social media, calling its return “a beautiful tribute to the Games and our city.” French sporting legends, including judo star Teddy Riner and sprinter Marie-José Pérec, had the honor of lighting the original cauldron, a moment that many regard as one of the most innovative in Olympic history.

Drawing inspiration from France’s pioneering role in aviation—the Montgolfier brothers launched one of the first hot air balloons from the Tuileries in 1783—the Olympic balloon blends history, technology, and sustainability. Its return ensures that the magic of the Games remains a fixture in the Parisian summer for years to come.
