In a move that reshapes the political landscape of Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley announced on Friday his decision to step away from politics, signaling the conclusion of his decades-long career in public service.

Addressing the media at a gathering in Tobago, Rowley, 75, reflected on his journey, describing his tenure as one of dedication and service. “Forty-five years is a lifetime in politics,” he remarked. “The time has come to pass the baton and allow new leadership to take the reins.”

Rowley’s announcement comes at a pivotal time, as the nation prepares for general elections later this year. Despite his plans to remain as leader of the ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) during the transition, he confirmed he would not seek re-election for the Diego Martin West constituency, a seat he has held since 1991.

While he refrained from naming a specific departure date, Rowley made it clear that his exit would occur before the legal expiration of his current term. “I will ensure a stable handover, but my focus now shifts to my family and personal life,” he said.

The announcement was met with a mix of surprise and nostalgia as Rowley, a key figure in the nation’s political evolution, prepares to close the chapter on a storied career. The decision marks the end of an era for Trinidad and Tobago, with the political future now poised for new voices and perspectives to emerge.
