Sangster International Airport (SIA) is gearing up for a transformative leap in passenger processing with the introduction of biometric technology for departing travelers in 2025. The innovation promises to redefine how travelers navigate the bustling airport.

Shane Munroe, CEO of MBJ Airports Ltd, shared the vision at a recent airport forum, emphasizing the focus on efficiency. “We are pushing forward with systems that will make travel smoother and faster. Biometric technology is the future, and we’re excited to bring this to our departure processes,” he remarked.

The plan includes deploying e-gates for security clearance and biometric boarding, making traditional document checks a thing of the past. Self-service kiosks will allow passengers to enroll their biometrics for seamless processing from check-in to boarding. These changes aim to complement the biometric system already in place for arriving passengers.

Munroe explained the core objective: “Our goal is to eliminate bottlenecks. Passengers should spend less time waiting and more time enjoying their journey.”

The move comes amidst broader upgrades across the airport. Passengers will also benefit from self-service bag drop stations, enabling luggage processing without assistance. Airlines partnering in this project are already testing the technology, and the results are promising.

Beyond passenger experience, significant infrastructure developments are underway. A new access road is being constructed to ease traffic flow into the airport, ensuring smoother entry and exit for travelers. “This road will bypass the main roundabout and streamline movement directly to arrivals and departures,” said Munroe.

SIA’s transformation extends to amenities, with plans for a new gas station, automated car parks, and expanded spaces for car rental services. The airport’s commitment to modernization also includes a dedicated processing area for cruise ship passengers, which is expected to ease congestion during the busy winter season.

With over $200 million invested in upgrades, Sangster International Airport is positioning itself as a leader in regional travel innovation. Munroe’s team remains focused on delivering cutting-edge solutions that prioritize convenience, efficiency, and passenger satisfaction.

“This is more than an upgrade; it’s a reinvention of how we serve travelers. Sangster International will set a new benchmark for what airports can achieve,” Munroe concluded.
