After a series of disappointing results in their away Champions League matches, Arsenal are gearing up for a pivotal clash against Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, with manager Mikel Arteta demanding a more ruthless performance from his side.
The Gunners have struggled on the road, failing to find the back of the net in their last four European matches. Their only away win in the competition this season came against Sevilla in October 2023, and a narrow 1-0 loss to Inter Milan earlier this month has left them languishing in 12th place in the early stages of the revamped tournament.
Arteta is keen to shift the narrative and is determined that the upcoming match in Lisbon offers the perfect opportunity to reignite their campaign.
“It’s all about getting the result now,” Arteta stated during a press conference. “We’ve shown we can compete at a high level, but we need to be more decisive. We’ve been in control of games but haven’t turned those performances into wins. Against Inter, for example, we played well in spells, but football is about making those moments count.”
The challenge in Lisbon comes against a Sporting team full of confidence, having recently turned heads with a stunning 4-1 victory over Manchester City. Despite a managerial change, with Joao Pereira now at the helm after Ruben Amorim’s departure to Manchester United, Sporting’s form remains impressive.
“They’ve been on a remarkable run, and their energy is undeniable,” said Arteta. “It’s going to be a tough match, but we need to show we are capable of stepping up. We have to take control, be assertive, and get those three points.”
In what could be a welcome boost for Arsenal, defender Kieran Tierney has made the squad for the trip to Portugal. The Scotland international has been sidelined since June due to a hamstring injury sustained at Euro 2024. If called upon, Tierney will make his first appearance for the club since the 2023 Community Shield.
“It’s fantastic to have Kieran back in the fold,” Arteta noted. “He’s been working hard to get fit, and he’s fully involved in training now. We’re ready for whatever challenge comes our way.”
Arsenal’s road struggles in the Champions League remain a major talking point, but Arteta is confident that his team has what it takes to overcome the obstacles in Lisbon. “The key is to stay focused and ruthless,” he concluded. “We know what we’re capable of, now we just need to prove it on the pitch.”
