Jamaica is under a severe weather alert as the Meteorological Service has announced that a potentially dangerous weather system is approaching the island. The alert will remain in effect until 5 PM on Monday, November 4, 2024.
According to a statement from the Met Office on Saturday, a large area of disturbed weather has been identified over the southwestern Caribbean Sea, near Panama. This system of low pressure is projected to move northward and gradually strengthen over the next day or so.
There is a significant chance that this weather pattern could evolve into a tropical cyclone. Forecasters anticipate that a tropical depression or storm may develop just south of Jamaica by Monday morning, with projections indicating that it will then travel east and north of the island by Tuesday.
The Meteorological Service warns that, regardless of how the system develops, Jamaica should prepare for unstable weather conditions starting Sunday night and continuing through Wednesday evening. Residents can expect overcast skies, heavy showers, and thunderstorms, with the potential for strong winds affecting many areas, especially in the eastern and south-central parishes.
Fishermen in the region are advised to make preparations and remain alert for possible evacuation orders if conditions worsen.
The Meteorological Service is committed to monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as necessary.
