In a dramatic turn of events Saturday morning, a city bus careened off a coastal roadway in Montevideo, coming to a rest on Pocitos beach and injuring 15 people, six of them critically.
The incident occurred in the Pocitos area, a lively and upscale section of Montevideo, where the bus broke through a barrier wall along the coastal promenade before stopping near the shoreline. Authorities are working to determine what led to the crash, with initial reports suggesting potential mechanical failure as the cause.
“The preliminary investigation points to a possible brake malfunction,” confirmed Alejandro Perez, a National Navy spokesperson.
The driver, who was thrown from the bus on impact, is among those with the most serious injuries. While six passengers remain in critical condition, nine others were treated for minor injuries. An in-depth investigation is underway as officials review the vehicle’s condition and other potential contributing factors to this unexpected and unsettling incident.
