During a recent event in Montego Bay, Mark Golding, President of the People’s National Party (PNP), criticized the current Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration for its handling of the legal cannabis industry, asserting that their policies have severely undermined its potential. Golding pledged that a PNP-led government would prioritize revitalizing the sector, particularly to benefit small farmers who have historically contributed to its growth.

Golding highlighted the significance of the 2015 reform to the Dangerous Drugs Act, which marked a pivotal shift in Jamaica’s approach to cannabis. This legislation decriminalized personal possession and usage, recognized Rastafarian rights to cultivation, and established a foundation for a burgeoning medical cannabis market. However, he contended that despite these advancements, the industry remains in disarray.

“The current administration’s mismanagement has devastated the legal ganja sector, depriving our farmers of opportunities for economic growth. We are committed to a comprehensive restructuring of the industry to ensure it becomes a viable source of income for small farmers who have long labored in the shadows of prohibition,” Golding declared.

He emphasized the global potential for the cannabis market, indicating that Jamaica can capitalize on international trends and initiatives. “The door has opened for us to innovate and expand. We must seize this opportunity to not only support our local farmers but to position Jamaica as a leader in the global cannabis industry.”

Golding made these remarks during the inauguration of the PNP’s St James Central constituency office, where he also expressed confidence in the party’s candidate, Janice Allen, who aims to challenge incumbent JLP MP Heroy Clarke in the upcoming general election. Clarke has held the seat since 2016.
