In a significant statement on Saturday, French President Emmanuel Macron urged an immediate cessation of arms deliveries to Israel, spotlighting concerns over the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Macron emphasized the need for a shift toward a political resolution, stating, “Today, the priority is to return to a political solution and to stop delivering weapons for the conflict in Gaza.” This declaration was made during an interview with France Inter.
Notably, Macron clarified that France itself is not currently supplying arms to Israel. The context of his remarks comes as international scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza intensifies. The U.S. plays a major role in supplying arms to Israel, providing around $3 billion annually. Recent comments from the U.S. State Department indicated a lack of sufficient evidence to halt these shipments, although they acknowledged concerns about potential violations of humanitarian law.
In September, the UK government announced a suspension of certain arms exports to Israel due to a perceived risk of serious breaches of international humanitarian law.
Macron expressed his frustration with the ongoing violence, suggesting that calls for a ceasefire are falling on deaf ears. He remarked, “We are not being heard,” and cautioned that continued conflict could jeopardize Israel’s own security, contributing to a growing atmosphere of animosity.
Highlighting regional stability, Macron underscored the importance of preventing Lebanon from becoming embroiled in the conflict. “Lebanon cannot become a new Gaza,” he asserted, indicating that avoiding further escalation is critical.
As Israel prepares to mark the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which catalyzed the current Gaza war, the humanitarian toll continues to rise. Recent figures indicate that the death toll from the attack has reached 1,205, predominantly civilian casualties, while Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in at least 41,825 deaths, with most victims being civilians, according to health officials in the Hamas-controlled region. The United Nations has deemed these figures credible, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention and dialogue.
