Fortinet, the global leader in cybersecurity known for pioneering the integration of networking and security, has released its threat landscape report for the first semester of 2024 in Jamaica. This report, compiled with insights from FortiGuard Labs, Fortinet’s dedicated threat intelligence and analysis laboratory, reveals a troubling increase in cyber threats.

During the first half of 2024, Jamaica experienced a staggering 4 million attempted cyberattacks, with February being the peak month for activity. This data underscores the growing and evolving nature of the cyber threat landscape.

Carlo Caloca, Fortinet’s Regional Sales Manager for the English Caribbean, commented on the findings: “The cyber threat landscape is rapidly evolving. Cybercriminals are becoming more specialized, employing increasingly sophisticated techniques for recognition and evasion. This evolution has heightened their chances of success.”

Caloca emphasized the need for organizations to adopt a more proactive approach to cybersecurity. “To combat these advanced threats, it is crucial for organizations to leverage coordinated, actionable threat intelligence supported by real-time artificial intelligence across all security devices. This approach is vital for detecting suspicious activities and initiating a coordinated response across the entire attack surface.”

The report also highlights a significant shift in attack strategies. While ransomware detections have decreased by 70% compared to the first half of 2023, the nature of these attacks has become more targeted. Industrial sectors, including energy, healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and automotive, are now the primary targets.

“In this evolving threat landscape, companies must be more vigilant than ever,” Caloca continued. “Protecting every digital asset—from hardware and software to IoT devices, access points, and remote devices—is essential. A robust strategy focusing on enhanced threat intelligence capabilities, powered by machine learning and artificial intelligence, is critical.”

The report stresses the importance of proactive threat monitoring and analysis to identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited. “By identifying potential threats early, businesses can implement remediation measures before any actual intrusion occurs. Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a pivotal tool in cybersecurity, helping businesses protect their assets and safeguard user privacy,” Caloca added.

Ronald Donaldson, Senior Major Account Manager at Fortinet Jamaica, further emphasized the need for continuous improvement in cybersecurity practices. “Recent data highlights the critical importance of updating cybersecurity platforms and incorporating education and awareness programs into business strategies. Human error remains a significant factor in cybersecurity breaches, often through phishing campaigns that could be avoided with proper training and updated security measures.”

As Jamaica navigates an increasingly complex cyber threat environment, Fortinet’s report serves as a crucial reminder for organizations to bolster their security infrastructure and remain vigilant against emerging threats.
